Each manufacturer offers different type of handgun, and therefore the best type of handgun to carry is the one that best fits your needs, and of course the one that looks good in your hand. It’s no secret that all handguns look good, but that is only if you choose the right type of handgun. In this article, I discuss some of the differences between Ruger J frame and Smith & Wesson J frame; as well as comparing the various grips available on both models.
Ruger & Smith have two selections of handguns to offer; the Ruger revolter and the Smith & Wesson revolver. The Ruger J frame is manufactured from a lighter alloy, making it easier to grip. While the Smith & Wesson J frame are made from a heavier alloy, the difference is barely noticeable. Both of these models are available with a leather or synthetic holster, and both models can be found with a plethora of different styles of front sights.
Smith & Wesson models that feature the Ruger J frame include models in both stainless steel and classic panels. The standard size of the grip is six inches, while there is a grip size that ranges from five to seven inches. Classic panels have the textured, raised, squared off shape. These grips tend to be a little less comfortable, with more of a “give” when gripping the gun.
Ruger also offers two classic models of its revolvers; a nickel plated model, and an antique silver plated model. Both styles are available in both leather and synthetic textures. Ruger models that feature the nickel plated grips feature an aluminum frame that is similar to those of Smith & Wesson revolvers. With a traditional pistol grip, they are slightly smaller than Ruger’s stainless steel models. The textured texture gives the gun a unique look.
An older version of Ruger’s classic panels grip, which is called the “service grip”, has a stippled surface. It is textured like a classic panel’s model but does not have a raised frame like a classic panels model. Instead, the sides of the grip are stippled until it is painted. After the paint dries, it becomes an antique finish, just like the older style of Ruger revolvers. These old service grips are only offered in stainless steel.
The most recent type of Ruger J frame grips feature finger grooves, like those found on Smith & Wesson revolvers. Finger grooves allow the user to more readily control a trigger, as well as to provide more friction when gripping the gun. The finger grooves are textured like the classic panels, but they do not have raised frames like the classic panels. Instead, the finger grooves are painted white or black, to make the grip look like the stainless steel models.
The newest type of Ruger J frame grip, the bateleur grip, provides more friction and makes a more comfortable grip. Unlike the finger grooves, the bateleur grip does not feature raised frame, just like the classic models do not. The raised frame of the bateleur grip provides better support for the gun while the finger grooves prevent the gun from slipping down your finger when you hold it in a traditional grip. Both the classic Ruger models the revolvers, and the bateleur grip are sold without a magazine, but some models do come with a magazine included.
When shopping for a new holster for your Ruger J frame, one of the most important features to look for is comfort. If the holster does not fit your hand well, you will not use it often or feel comfortable holding it. Different hand sizes require different holsters to ensure that the gun feels comfortable when it is used.
